The original and still the best-value rail pass available to visitors is the Japan Rail Pass, which covers the whole country. Most regional JR companies sell their own rail passes, which are a cheaper alternative to the national pass and may be of interest to anyone intending to focus their travel on a specific area. With some exceptions the JR passes must be purchased before arrival in Japan.
